Devotional January 25, 2021

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

Matthew 6:25-26, NRSV

Since the start of this school year, when my children have been doing school from home, our mornings revolve around the sound of the alarms on my phone. I’m no child psychologist, but I know my children thrive in a consistent routine… and so we set a series of alarms on my phone to help us keep that routine. Every day at the same time, an alarm reminds me to wake them. Every day at the same time, an alarm reminds them to eat breakfast. Every day at the same time, an alarm reminds them to get dressed and brush their teeth. Every day at the same time, an alarm reminds Noah to change our daily calendar and reminds Ellie to fill the bird feeder. 

Because of that last alarm, we have a daily opportunity to “look at the birds of the air” (Matthew 6:26, NRSV). After Ellie fills the bird feeder, she watches through the window as cardinals and chickadees and blue jays and finches flock to their freshly-filled birdseed feast. 

“Look at the birds of the air,” Jesus says (to gathered crowds, and to us). “They neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them” (Matthew 6:26, NRSV). At the moment, God is indeed feeding those birds… but happens to be doing so through Ellie and me.
