1 For the LORD is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.
-Psalm 100:5, NRSV
Today is Inauguration Day, a day of significance and transition. This alone would make it a day that calls for prayer. Yet the specifics of this Inauguration Day — one that falls just two weeks after a day of violence in the US Capitol, one that is marked by security concerns in Washington DC and in state capitals across the country, one that remains under the shadow of the coronavirus crisis — calls for prayer all the more.
So I call you to pray, church. Pray for our new President and Vice President, for the leaders of their administration, for those with shifting roles in the Senate and the House. Pray for those who now have the responsibility of leading our nation in this most trying of times.
As I paged through my prayer books, I came across this prayer — a “Prayer for National Holidays” — that included some petitions that seemed fitting for this day:
Enable those who govern us to seek the welfare not only of ourselves and of all the people who share this planet with us but also the welfare of our children and our children’s children... from generation to generation. (Laurence Hull Stookey, "This Day: A Wesleyan Way of Prayer," 131)
Today, I’m praying for those who lead, for those who protect those who lead, and for those whose lives are most impacted by the decisions of those who lead.
