Leading chapel time for the children of our Wesley Circle of Friends Preschool has always been one of the most joy-filled parts of my role as lead pastor… and this week found me back at WCOF Chapel! Of course, like most things in this season of COVID-tide, chapel looks a bit different. Instead of gathering the children together in the sanctuary, chapel time happens at home, virtually, with a pre-recorded video message.
While the format of chapel looks different (I never expected to have to “upload” chapel!), one thing remains the same: at the beginning of every chapel service, I light a candle with the children. I tell them that the candle is a reminder that God is here with us, wherever we are! (Our “Fours” kiddos love taking on the role of “Candle Lighter.” Now that chapel takes place at home, I tell them to ask a grown-up to help them light a candle — it’s always the right time to give a reminder about fire safety!) I remind them that God is always with us, no matter whether our candle is lit… but that the candle makes a great reminder.
So if you need a reminder today: God is with you, church. If you have trouble remembering that… light a candle, and let the light remind you.
Blessings
