The Eighth Day:
Eight Maids A-Milking
We eat our share of food every day – and perhaps even more than our share of food during the holidays. Yet as we purchase, prepare, and enjoy our food, we often don’t give much thought to where our food comes from or who is involved in the process of getting that food to our tables. When we sing of eight “maids a-milking,” we can think of the many people along the way whose hard work makes our meals possible.
On this eighth day, as you enjoy one of your meals, offer a prayer before you eat for the people who worked to plant, grow, raise, harvest, transport, inspect, package, and sell your food. When we say grace, it’s common to give thanks for our food and the hands that have prepared it. Today, give thanks for all of the hands and all of the people involved in that process.
In this season of COVID-tide, don’t forget those essential workers who have helped keep our cupboards and refrigerators full. In particular, offer a prayer asking God’s protection to those working in our grocery stores, those delivering groceries or meals to people at high-risk, and those in the restaurant industry who are struggling greatly in this time of social distancing. If you’re able, support a local restaurant by ordering take-out for your New Year’s Day dinner (or another dinner this week).
On this eighth day, devote your prayers and your resources to the benefit of those who make the gift of food possible.
