The First Day:
A Partridge in a Pear Tree
Fun fact: partridges don’t live in pear trees. Partridges don’t live in any trees. They’re ground-nesting birds. So why do we sing about a partridge in a pear tree? It may actually be a mispronunciation or a mistranslation. We don’t know. What we do know: you’d never expect a partridge to be in a pear tree… except in a Christmas song, that is.
At Christmas, we celebrate the most amazing “unexpected place” story. We celebrate the story of a God who chose to leave the glories of heaven and become one of us, a human being, here on earth. Who would have expected the God of all creation to be found in a manger of Bethlehem, of all places?!? Gods don’t live in humble mangers, right? But ours does… especially at Christmas.
This Christmas may be a quieter Christmas than most. On this Christmas Day in COVID-tide, you may be doing less traveling, less running around, less rushing out to see people. So use that quiet. Take some time today to read the scriptures of Christmas (try Luke 2:1-14 and John 1:1-14). Reflect on the Christmas story and offer a prayer of thanks to the God who can be found in the most unexpected of places.
