Today is Christmas Eve!
Merry Almost Christmas, friends.
Tomorrow we’ll celebrate the joy of Christmas Day… yet we often overlook the fact that Christmas isn’t confined to a day. Christmas is a whole season, a season that begins on Christmas Day. We don’t often talk about Christmas as a season. We talk about the season of Advent, sure… but Christmas? We generally think of Christmas as one day. One joyful, stressful, exciting, overwhelming, wonderful day.
Yet in the church, Christmas is a season… a season that lasts for twelve days. That’s right, church — it’s not just a song. “The Twelve Days of Christmas” is a song that speaks to the church’s 12-day season of Christmas, stretching from Christmas Day on December 25 to Epiphany on January 6.
In those years when Christmas Day happens to fall on a Sunday, it has become a little tradition of mine to extend a “12 Days of Christmas Challenge” to the people of my congregation. This year, though Christmas doesn’t fall on a Sunday, I thought I’d extend the same kind of challenge through our daily devotional. Perhaps it’s just what we need this year, as Christmastide overlaps with COVID-tide.
So join with me, church! Take the “12 Days of Christmas Challenge.” (You’ll find the first challenge in your inbox tomorrow morning.)
It’s one more way, in this most joyful season,
to be “people blessing people.”
