Sleeping Mat Project

Click for Plarn Project Update

Have you ever heard of PLARN? Plarn is using plastic bags into yarn to create sleeping mats for homeless individuals to aid in keeping them dry and more comfortable from sleeping on the direct ground. This is what we are looking for:

  • Wanted:   people interested in making plastic sleeping mats for the homeless to insulate them from the cold dampness of the ground
  • Skills needed:  cutting with scissors and single crochet (or team up with someone to share these two jobs)
  • Tools needed:  scissors, a bigger-sized crochet hook (size “P” is recommended), a yardstick or measuring tape
  • Raw materials:  clean used plastic shopping and grocery bags with soft seams  – these are turned into a plastic yarn, called… plarn!
  • Guidance:  Wendy Arbushites can teach you how to do the entire process.  It’s very easy!
  • Supply source:  We currently have plenty of bags that have been “quarantined” for at least a week to avoid any Coronavirus issues.  Please email Wendy Arbushites at warb@rcn.com if you are interested in helping.

Here’s a video of how to create a sleeping mat.

Catching Up
with Pastor Candy:
April 17

In ministry, every day brings something different, and this week was no exception! This week was one of high tech / low tech balance. I spent some of my time this week meeting with our church livestream volunteers to introduce the new technology (see photo below) that will enable us to enhance our livestream worship and offer vibrant hybrid worship well into the future.

Later in the week, I went more low tech — planting seeds with my children, with the eventual goal of planting the seedlings in my Wesley Community Garden plot. I’m not blessed with a green thumb, but I have a willing spirit — so we’ll see how it goes!.

Today’s Community Connections

  • If you are interested in providing fresh flowers for worship, please sign up at the Connections Corner table.
  • Feel like you missed something? The Connections Corner table can help. Head across the atrium and get the information you need just under the tv monitor.
  • Don’t receive our Weekly E-News? Please email Sue Kiefner at: SueK@wesleychurch.com to get on the list! Or sign up at the Connections Corner table.
  • Do you enjoy being creative with pictures and video?  Do you like telling a story through images?  We are looking for people who enjoy making videos, who can use technology to help represent some of the music we use in worship, and possibly other parts of the worship service such as announcements, testimonies, and more.  If this interests or excites you, please see Becky Graybeal for more details and to get plugged in!
