First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone,
for kings and all who are in high positions,
so that we may lead a quiet and
peaceable life in all godliness and dignity.
This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
who desires everyone to be saved
and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
-1 Timothy 2:1-4, NRSV
Today, I’m praying for our leaders.
Last night, I spent much of the evening on Zoom webinar, listening to an urgent and ardent debate. In the school district where my husband works as a teacher, the school board was meeting to debate and decide on a motion to transition to all-virtual learning, in light of the rising transmission rates of COVID-19.
As board members and community members shared their thoughts and perspectives, their ideas and concerns, I felt mixed emotions. Some speeches left me feeling reassured. Others, utterly frustrated. Yet in all of it, I was reminded of the heavy responsibility that rested on the shoulders of these nine board members, as well as the superintendent. Their work is hard work. Their decisions are hard decisions. And in this meeting, they were taking both — the work and the decisions — seriously.
Friends, I urge you to pray for leaders, for those with the power and responsibility to make hard decisions in these hard times. Political leaders. Public health leaders. School administrators. Hospital administrators. Church leaders, including our own Wesley Reopening Team. (And if I may be so bold, church: I’d covet your prayers, too.)
This is a season of weighty decisions.
Those decisions don’t come with clear-cut answers…
but they do potentially come with grave consequences.
Those who make those decisions need your prayers.
Do lift them up in prayer today.
Blessings,
Pastor Candy
