1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb
2 through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
3 Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him;
4 they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.
5 And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
-Revelation 22:1-5, NRSV
As I write this, I’m sitting in the sun. The air is warm, and the sky is blue, and there’s a picnic blanket spread on the grass beneath my feet. It’s November, but it feels more like May.
The sun is shining down on us, apparently in no hurry to be chased away by the steady march of the winter solstice or hemmed in by the constraints of Daylight Savings Time. The sun seems happy to linger, and for the moment, I’m happy to linger in it.
I know this sun-drenched moment is fleeting. In the weeks ahead, I’ll long for the sun — its warmth, its optimism, its mood-lightening vitamin D. In the weeks ahead, I’ll be hard-pressed to remember how it felt to bask in the sun in the midst of November.
And so, in the weeks ahead, I hope I can call to mind this passage, these words from the book of Revelation. I hope I can remember that in the end, at the end, the sun won’t even be necessary. God will be all the light I’ll need.
I hope I can remember that’s not just true “in the end” or “at the end.” I hope I can remember that in this moment, God is all the light I’ll need.
Blessings,
Pastor Candy
