Daily Devotional July 7

35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?…
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
      – Romans 8:35, 37-39, NRSV

It’s the world’s most perfect food. Can you think of anything better than a toasted marshmallow and gooey chocolate sandwiched between two graham crackers? The s’more is the world’s most perfect food.

In our family, summer is the season of s’mores… and summer in the midst of COVID means more time spent at home, more time spent in the backyard, more time spent around a fire pit, and more time to (you guessed it) eat s’mores. We’re going through graham crackers and Hershey bars and marshmallows at an alarming rate this summer.

Of course, a s’more aficionado like myself doesn’t need it to be summer to enjoy a s’more. Last October, as part of the Trunk-or-Treat for our Wesley’s Circle of Friends Preschool, I covered my car with s’more-themed decorations and gave our preschoolers the chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers they’d need to make their own s’mores at home. (Who says you can’t have s’mores in October?)

The decorations on my car weren’t just s’more-themed… they were Jesus-themed, too. “Jesus Loves You S’More Than You Know,” they read. Simple enough for the kiddos to grasp… and deep enough for the grown-ups to embrace, too.

It’s what Paul is getting at, I think, in today’s scripture reading. Jesus loves you s’more than you know. Jesus’ love for you is greater than anything, and there’s nothing that can change that or overcome that or get in the way of that.

Those words are always a comfort… but all the more so in this strange and stressful season. So roast up some marshmallows, friends. Grab the graham crackers and chocolate bars. Treat yourself to a s’more… and while you’re at it, remind yourself: Jesus loves you s’more than you know.

And remember, friends:

Our God is bigger than coronavirus.
Our vision is bigger than coronavirus, too.
We are people blessing people.
We are Wesley Church.

Blessings,

Pastor Candy

Masking will remain optional at Wesley Church

In order to help you make an informed decision about your own mitigation practices, Wesley Church will share our county’s updated risk category and the CDC’s corresponding guidelines in each edition of our weekly enews.
We are currently in the “high risk” category. The CDC guidelines for the “high” category are:

Wear a mask indoors in public

Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines

Get tested if you have symptoms

Additional precautions may be needed for people at high risk for severe illness
