Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning,
for in you I put my trust.
Teach me the way I should go,
for to you I lift up my soul.
– Psalm 143:8, NRSV
Parents agonize over the decision. Should we send the kids to school? Should we keep them at home? Hybrid? Remote? Cyber? What’s the risk? What’s our risk? Are we doing the right thing? Are we doing this the right way?
Lord… teach me the way I should go.
Administrators weigh the options. How can we keep the students safe? How can we keep the staff safe? Can we keep them truly safe? Are they safe at home? What resources do we need, and how can we get them in time? Are we doing the right thing? Are we doing this the right way?
Lord… teach me the way I should go.
Government officials take stock of the situation. Do we take action now? Do we wait and see? What actions are needed? What actions will keep everyone safe? Can we keep everyone safe? Are we doing the right thing? Are we doing this the right way?
Lord… teach me the way I should go.
Pastors and church leaders analyze the risks. When can we return to the sanctuary for worship? Can we sing together? Can we share communion together? Can we be together? Or should we remain online? Are we doing the right thing, the Christ-like thing? Are we doing this the right way?
Lord… teach me the way I should go.
Families make the hard choices. It has been too long since we’ve seen the people we love…can we visit them now? Or should we still keep our distance? What’s the safest option? What’s the most loving option? Are we doing the right thing? Are we doing this the right way?
Lord… teach me the way I should go.
In this season of covid-tide, decisions abound… and the choices are such hard choices. We wonder: Are we doing the right thing? Are we doing this the right way? If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of decisiveness that COVID seems to require of you, may you pray alongside the psalmist:
Teach me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.
