The little book by Dorothy L. Sayers, The Mind of the Maker, has been in my bookcase for a long time. I don’t remember when I got it or when I learned about her ”who-done-it’s” with Lord Peter Wimsey solving the mysteries. But Dorothy Sayers was not just a mystery writer. She was well acquainted with C.S. Lewis who wrote about Narnia and Aslan the lion; and with J.R.R. Tolkien who created the Lord of the Rings. They were part of the Inklings society in Oxford.
Now that we are sheltering in place so to speak, we all have more time to read. So – after I re-read the stories about Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane, I took The Mind of the Maker off the shelf. Here, we are invited into the mind of God, into the essence of God. The 2nd chapter, The Image of God, starts out with
“In the beginning God created. . . .And he created man in his own image; in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.”
She points out that the only thing we know about God is that God created. That is our image. It is what we have in common with God. We both create.
The nature of creating is three-fold:
- the Idea is there, in our mind
- we create some Form to bring the idea to life, into being
- it has an Effect as it is beheld or valuedIt is a Trinity.
Trinity is the shape of our God-image.
Authors have an idea that they write and we read and talk about it, and keep talking. Cooks choose a menu, prepare it, and we join around the table eating and remember being together. We know a friend needs help, we bring cookies and conversation, a feeling of wellbeing keeps emerging. We see a problem, we write to our congress members, we become ever more vigilant in listening to news.
So let’s do it! Let’s live out our God given image of creating. It is needed!
