Daily Devotional April 21

Anxiety weighs down the human heart, but a good word cheers it up.
-Proverbs 12:25, NRSV

If this proverb holds — and I think it does — then there are a lot of weighed-down hearts out there.

After all, in this season of coronavirus, anxiety is all around. No one is immune. Anxiety about having to go to work. Anxiety about not being able to go to work. Anxiety about health. Anxiety about finances. Anxiety about supply levels. Anxiety about loved ones. If anxiety weighs down the human heart, then there must be a lot of weighed-down hearts out there. Anxiety is all around.

But the proverb also reminds us: a good word cheers up that weighed-down heart. In this season, I hope you’re sharing many of those good words with people you know, people you love, people you pass (at a distance of six or more feet, of course).

In particular, I hope you’re sharing many of those good words with those who are making life possible for the rest of us, those who are confronting coronavirus (and the anxiety it brings) more regularly than the rest of us, those who are on the “front lines” of this pandemic. Healthcare workers. First responders. Grocery workers. Delivery workers. I hope you’re offering a good word to cheer their weighed-down hearts in particular.

In fact, I want to invite you to do just that. As a church family, we’re working on a project — a photo collage — to offer a word of prayer and encouragement to all on the front lines of this pandemic. Want to be a part of that? Click on our SignUp Genius link for more info.

(Please note — photos are due by this Friday, April 24.)

In the meantime, may we all find ways to respond to the weighed-down, anxious hearts around us with a cheering, uplifting, life-giving “good word.”

It’s just what “people blessing people” do, right? After all:

Our God is bigger than coronavirus.
Our vision is bigger than coronavirus, too.
We are people blessing people.
We are Wesley Church.

Blessings,

Pastor Candy

Masking will remain optional at Wesley Church

In order to help you make an informed decision about your own mitigation practices, Wesley Church will share our county’s updated risk category and the CDC’s corresponding guidelines in each edition of our weekly enews.
We are currently in the “high risk” category. The CDC guidelines for the “high” category are:

Wear a mask indoors in public

Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines

Get tested if you have symptoms

Additional precautions may be needed for people at high risk for severe illness
